I cannot configure my Belina 1440 x 900 monitor with SAX2 under YAST in Suse 11.1

Hello All,

I have a modern wide screen 19" monitor connected to a an NVIDIA 6200 card via a 15 pin DSUB VGA cable.

My problem is that I can only run 1024 x 768 and when I set the resolution to 1440 x 900 in SAX, the test screen presents me with 640 x 480.

I have snooped about in various places and not really come up with anything. It's frustrating to have to run a modern monitor connected to a modern video card in a non native resolution?!

Any help appreciated.
Joe

have you installed the nvidia driver

I did install the nvidia driver on a previous install attempt and it did not fix anything I am afraid.

I can try again.

I have KDE installed, is it relevant if I have KDE or GNOME front end - for nvidia?

Last time I installed it, I recall I located a config option for nvidia but my native resolution of 1440 x 900 was not listed as a pick.

Question

Ok This is what I get when I run sax2 -r

mcmorj@barton:~> su

barton:/home/mcmorj #
barton:/home/mcmorj # sax -r
bash: sax: command not found
barton:/home/mcmorj # sax2 -r

If I set the card and the monitor resolution to 1440x900 then the test screen sets itself to 640x480 and if I leave the monitor setting and 1024x768 then that's what the resolution is on the test screen.

I am assuming the details above suggests the nvidia driver is in use? I could not find anything in yast to suggest there was another driver or package to download (search on nvidia).

Well more experimenting and I can get practically any other resolution EXCEPT the one I want!

I have set it to 1280 x 960 and it will accept it or
1280 x 1024 (and monitor says thats what is arriving in) but it will not have 1440 x 900

Ok it's months on and I am still having to use the wrong native resolution for my display.
It's like driving a car with the wrong seats installed. It's not acceptable!!
There is no point trying to adopt linux when even the most basic settings - like the display - the bit you have to use the most - is such a rat's nest to navigate through!!

I am a linux newbie and not even being able to address this is disheartening.

How can something so easy in windows be so complicated in Linux?! 1440 x 900 is a very common resolution, I know both my graphics card and monitor work flawlessly, they are quite happy when I dual boot into XP.

I have already covered the basics, can anyone at all help with what I am missing? I have tried various distros and whatever I try just does not work. I am stuck on 640x480. I was working at this resolution in 1995.

Help!

Lightbulb You Need a Newer Video Card for this Resolution!

I had a similar problem using a 720p LCD TV/Monitor under OPENSUSE 11.1 and the latest nVidia Video driver. The problem for me turned out to be the video card its self. I was using a nVidia 6600 and while I could find resolutions that would work, never the native resolution. I went to the local Fry's were I found a nVidia 9500 GT 512 meg card for 70 bucks. I installed the newer card, reloaded the same nVidia driver and WAM. My LCD monitor was working at its native resolution. I did not change anything else.

Thank You,
