HP2510 network printer in Suse 10.0

Well I'm back again trying to work out a Linux problem.

My HP psc2510 networked "all-in-one" inkjet printer will simply not set-up correctly with either the initial set-up of SUSE 10.0, or with the Yast/hardware/printer setup routine. I can find the URL/IP address of the HP's on-board print spool, and see the right driver in the set up process, But, when it comes to testing the print output, all I get printed gibberish and lots of wasted paper out of the printer.

I know this printer/driver configuration will work in Linux as I have it working in another distro (Kanotix 64bit). Does anyone have any helpful ideas ?

Also, I'd really love to have the Kanotix reiserfs partition mounted at boot and then show up as an HD icon on the desktop. I can mount it, but can't see how to make it appear as an HD icon.
Some guru out there must know how to do this.

Any help on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Paul

You could try to use another ppd file. SUSE has quite a selection and the default may not give the best result.
Maybe you can even copy the ppd file from the Kanotix and use it on the SUSE system.

SuSE 10.0 comes with HPLIP 0.9.4. Perhaps you need to go to the HP site and get the latest HPLIP 0.9.7. That's how I got my PSC 1410 working in all modes. You will need the C compiler, gcc, and make to install. Reasonably easy to follow instructions are on the HP site.

Fragos, thanks. I did just as you suggested and it worked fine.

Now, all I need to figure out is hop to get the HD partition fo rmy other installed distro to mount and show up as a HD icon on the desktop.

Thanks

Paul

Assuming your running SuSE, click the "My Computer" Icon on the desktop. The resulting konqueror window should show you all partitions, except swap, as mounted. Click on the one you want and you have access to the files in that partition. They are labeled "{size} Media" rather than "hd{n}".

If you must have the link on the desktop, do the following:

1. right click the desktop
2. Create New - Link to Device - Hard disk Device
3. Click "Device" tab
4. Click drop down list arrow and select device

Fragos, I am using OpenSuse 10.0 and do not see the links you mention when I click on the desktop icon. I can mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/data1 and then see this other reiser partition and the files it holds in Konqueror, but I have not been able to place it on the desktop as an HD icon like the Windows HD icon or my other backup HD icon.

The reason I want to do this is that I am running a multi-boot system with Win (hda1) Kanotix64 (sda3) and OpenSuse (sda6). I like the ability to pass certain files back and forth between the 2 *nix distros. So having each distro have the others partition mounted and showing on the respective desktops is convenient. I have been able to get /dev/sda6 (OpenSuse) mounted and displayed on the Kanotix64 desktop, just not the other way around .. that is, to mount and display /dev/sda3 (Kanotix64) on the OpenSuse desktop.

FYI ..I am using GNOME on OpenSuse and KDE for Kanotix64

Thanks for your effort to help me

Paul

I've just gotten around to buying a second box and will be experimenting to learn how to configure a LAN. I didn't realize that LAN was your issue. It's my understanding that NFS is used for sharing files on a Linux network. Perhaps that would make things easier for you. NFS is client server and is possible to run both a client and a server on both boxes. SuSE installs with a "Network" icon on the desktop and appears to be an approach to access NFS and Samba file systems. Use Samba to share files with Windows. It's more complex to use than NFS.
