I am using SuSE10 on a 56K line but managed to convince a friend to switch from MS to SUSE.

The problem is, he is using wireless ADSL in Windows on a desktop computer but I do not know how to setup for him.

The ISP here does not supports linux.


So, with the SSID and the WEP and the installation disk in MS, how can we proceed?

Congratulations on the change of OS Now on to network setup...
What wireless card does he have? I would start up YaST, go to "Network Devices"->"Network Card" and see if it is listed. If it is, select it and click "Edit" and step through the configuration, it will have places to select dhcp or static IP address, (I would assume dhcp), the next screen will have places to set the SSID and WEP key, and finish. Depending on what you have for wireless, you may find that you will need to download and install drivers/firmware first.

If you mean goto YAST -> Network Devices -> Network Card -> Network Card Configuration Overview ,
then we can see a new Name called "WLAN Controller"
and under the Wireless Network Card Configuration we managed to input the ESSID and Encryption Key.

But what next, does that mean we can go online now? (don't seems to be connected)

What did we miss?

Try the command "iwconfig" in a terminal and see what it reports. It should show things like the interface name for your wireless nic, (eth1 in my case), essid and the AP's MAC address, signal strength, link quality... Then try "ifconfig" and see if you have an IP address associated with the interface. It should show "inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and "up" in the output. If it doesn't show an IP address, try "ifup eth1" (use the correct interface name in place of "eth1"), and see if it gets an IP address, or reports some error. If it fails with an error, post the error.

Well a few wireless commands to get you started...

ifconfig - shows youSpitzer Subpoenas Music active network adaptors (ethernet and wireless)
iwconfig - shows you wireless configuration for a wireless adaptor
iwlist - lets you scan for wireless networks via command "iwlist <adaptor> scanning" (i.e. iwlist wlan0 scanning)
ifup - turn on a network adaptor
ifdown - turn off a network adaptor

the real question is if your Suse installed a driver for the wireless card you have. You can try iwlist wlan0 scanning, iwconfig wlan0 essid "network name", then ifup wlan0 and check ifconfig to see if you get an IP address.

I'm not sure if you have WEP or WPA security active on your wireless but your iwlist command will indicate it for you.

This should at least help get you started.
