I checked yast for lm_sensors libs. No such package installed, and not present in any repository. So I googled up rpm for lm_sensors and found packages for many distros. All the fedora packages (for example) have names like lm_sensors-libs but all the SUSE packages had names like libsensors4-xxxx. So I checked Yast again and yes, the latest rev of libsensors4 is installed.
I also don't want the problem and hope someone else has come across it and can assist.
I'm looking at SUSE forums as well. A similar problem had come up there, and I looked into the solution, but no luck, except the person responding to the thread was saying that they hadn't used lm_sensors since KDE 3 days!
I also tried installing another application gkrllm (which amongst other things is supposed to be able to display cpu temperature if lm_sensors is installed). There were temperature options amongst the sensors, but they do not have the right sensors. For the record, the gkrllm config options for temperature sensors are: acpitz@0temp1 and THRM. Both sensors show 32.0 degrees all the time.
And it only ever shows a temperature of 32.0 C. And the same goes for the only temperature sensor that is available in the KDE 4 "system monitor" (used to be sysguard in KDE 3). They all show acptiz-virtual-0 and nothing of the via686a lm_sensors configuration is to be found.
Finally, I have checked the file /etc/sensors3.conf which I understand is supposed to configure the sensors setup by sensors-detect. It contains a via686a section, which looks like this:
set in2_min 3.3 * 0.90
set in2_max 3.3 * 1.10
set in3_min 5.0 * 0.90
set in3_max 5.0 * 1.10
set in4_min 12.0 * 0.90
set in4_max 12.0 * 1.10
So there were no labels setup for temperature sensors. But also, the voltage sensors are not being reported. I edited the file so the section now looks like this:
set in2_min 3.3 * 0.90
set in2_max 3.3 * 1.10
set in3_min 5.0 * 0.90
set in3_max 5.0 * 1.10
set in4_min 12.0 * 0.90
set in4_max 12.0 * 1.10
label temp1 "CPU Temp"
label temp2 "M/B Temp"
Restarted the machine, then reran "sensors" with the same result. Since sensors command does not show the voltages, it must be getting configuration somewhere else?
conky - command not found. not installed. not in repositories.
I think this has to do with acpitz. The tz stands for "thermal zone". That's new. apparently many systems have a tendency to report dummy values if they don't support thermal zone. Apparently it is possible to disable the TZ functionality, but I can't yet see how.
