How to make the 2.6.27 Kernel lean ?

Hello all,

what options do I have to disable/enable in menuconfig in order to get the 2.6.27 kernel running as fast as the 2.4.x kernel on the same hardware ?
The 2.4.x runs definitely faster than the 2.6.x.

The cpu is probably the first construction site to begin with:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+
stepping : 0
cpu MHz : 1665.837
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow up
bogomips : 3331.67
clflush size : 32
power management: ts

thank you, Mario

The main problem about the 2.6 kernel is that it is more and more bloated. If you will remove every piece of unneeded modules and drivers from it, your system will work a little bit faster.
