These are the commands to use on the command line:

tar xvf nameofpackage.tar

or

tar xvfz nameofpackage.tar.gz

or

tar yxf nameofpackage.tar.bz2

Use this command if you only want certain directories from tar:

tar xvzf nameofpackage.tar.gz */directory you want/*
