How to establish dial-up connection from bash ?

How can I establish a dialup connection while I am at the runlevel 3 with bash. I modified my network parameter to connect automatically on demand but it is not helping to start the dial up connection.
I want to do this to install an update from Suse FTP site.
After an online update my system login screen is in a continues loop so I cannot login into level 5. My effort to repair the system did not succeed because I need to install gfxboot to possibly fix the login issue. Any help is greatly appreciated

Thank you all

try wvdial.

first run this as root:

wvdialconf create /etc/wvdial.conf

then edit /etc/wvdial.conf for your ISP info.
then run wvdial to connect.
