when i open smart package manager, and search xine, i then click on the latest xine lib, and click install, and it then has a red x in lib xine... i click the cogged wheel- error

I suggest you try uninstalling xine-lib-32bit and libwmf. After that install libxine.

I agree. I had to remove the old xine-lib packages to install the libxine stuff.

i uninstalled lib-xine,,,,lib xine 32-bit is not installed. and libwmf is not installed...when i install xine-lib ,,i get this-

That's a tough question. Looks like the installed version is old. Here's my suggestions (though, due to some problems I experienced with conflict resolution previously, it's at your own risk):

Update existing first. The installers should detect the correct versions and not pose a problem.

Examine the conflict resolutions from the installer. If it gives you an option to replace (and your using YaST) I think that would be best.

If it won't let you install or doesn't give you any of the previous options document the conflicting, installed packages. Then go through YaST, find and uninstall them and try the install again.

Unfortunately that's the end of what I think you have for options. I hope I've been some kind of helpful.

Hi. I have been trying for a while now to get my Suse 10.2 system to support playing streamed windows media (wmv) files. I need this for my schoolwork. I have finally got Firefox to handle the mime types correctly (using the firefox add-in MediaPlayerConnectivity) and it opens the stream in xine. However, I get an error message that reads "Audio Codec: Windows Media Audio Voice (0xa) start playback anyway?" After clicking yes, it plays the vide fine, but without the audio, of course. I have tried installing the essentials codec files in /usr/share/codecs, but that doesn't seem to help. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

For starters make sure that you have the w32 codecs installed. Firefox plug-ins have been buggy for me as well. I actually used the VLC Firefox plug-in. Wasn't a stream I couldn't play. Do things in this order:

Install VLC
Install w32 codecs (from YAST search for "w32"; make sure you have the packman repositories saved in your sources and disable them after this (packman repos include some buggy stuff that can cause conflicts: never leave them enabled))
Install the VLC Firefox plugin

After that you should be able to get all of your streams and embedded videos working with the added plus that you'll now have controls where you didn't before (some streams don't include them).

Download the rpm and install it manually using the rpm command. The link to the rpm is here.

Ok. Thanks. That worked. I needed to remove the old codecs directory first.

Apparently, I still lack the particular codec I need to play the specific flavor of .wmv file i need to play. I still get silence when I play it in VLC and in xine I get this error:
Is this codec available anywhere? Is there a way, say, to extract it from a working installation of windows and use it in SUSE?

I don't use suse,

but I got windows media 9 audio voice working by downloading the w32 binary codec pack from mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dloa...#binary_codecs and then unpacking the dll's to /usr/lib/codecs

both mplayer and xine (and many other players) check this directory for binary codecs and this maybe where the win32codecs from yum installed, (path used to be /usr/lib/win32 iirc so they may be there)

anyway this worked for me - it is possible that not all the codecs you require were in the yum package, I know that wma voice codec has had an especially dodgy history (M$ pulled it from windows for a while for legal reasons - at one point it was the acelp codec - not sure if that is still the case)

Using dial up will cause a lot of headaches because some of the files needed by smart and the packages from some of the smart repos are quite big so will just choke up your net connection. Maybe you need to get a distro that includes most multimedia stuff out of the box e.g. Mandriva Powerpack Website.
