How do I get the aditional yast repository working

I am using opensuse10, on amd64.
I added the yast suplementary for java, and kde, but how do I update kde and such. I just can figure it out.
I also been experiencing mp3 problems. I doesnt have de codec... cause sounds come out of the speakers but mp3 dont work.

What have you tried to play mp3? In amarok, I just found out that the using the helix engine (was the default) does not work, but if you switch to xine, everything works just fine. For codecs, install the mad packages (SUSE10 repos) and w32codecs (packman).

For the KDE update, look at this thread:

Sorry, I am confused. Could you or could you not figure out how to install it? And if not, what's the problem?

EclipseAgent 01-23-2006 11:43 AM

Ok, being rude won't help you at all, and being totally oblivious to what you are trying to do won't help us help you.

#1, What repository did you setup?
#2, What are you trying to install?

You should setup the Packman and the KDE Supplementary Repositories, and install xine packages from Packman and any updatable packages from the KDE SUpplementary repo. (be sure to set "refresh" to on.

EclipseAgent: I wasnt being rude...I´m sorry if thats the way it was understood.
Look here´s what i did.
I just added the yast repositories for updating KDE, and java.
I Could, by following the instructions on http://www.opensuse.org/Java, update java. But, although I read and search http://www.opensuse.org/KDE, I still don´t know how to update kde. I just added de repository but can find kde3.5 in software managment.
I only added the repository, now what do I have to do¿?

abisko00 01-24-2006 08:32 AM

You should have everything at hand from the other thread. There I mentioned a source as well as instructions on how to run the update. Just follow the link I gave you above and it will take you to the post with the instructions. If you added the repository some while ago, you may need to go to YaST->Installation Source->Edit->Refresh to update the local directory (in case the packages have been updated on the server).

alek66 01-24-2006 08:37 AM

And that´s what i didt, with the difference that i used the repositories for x86_64. But when i came to YaST->(Software/Software Management) I dont know how to update the kde. I know which packages to install, or how do I "tell" yast to update certain packages. Thats the ticket.

abisko00 01-24-2006 08:59 AM

OK, the instructions are how to update an existing installation, so you couldn't follow them directly. Instead of selecting the filter "Installation Summary', select "Selections" and tick "KDE Desktop Enirvonment" or "All of KDE".

alek66 01-24-2006 09:14 AM

and that will automaticalle update my existing kde to 3.5¿?
I´ll try that and then tell you how it went. Thanks abisko00

I think we have a communication problem here.

If you have KDE already installed (update):
YaST->Software Managment -> Filter "Installation Summary", tick "Keep" -> Menu "Package" -> "All in this list" -> "Update if newer version available" -> "Accept"

If you don't have KDE installed:
YaST->Software Managment -> Filter "Selections" -> tick "KDE Desktop Enirvonment" or "All of KDE" -> "Accept"

If you have some components (old version) installed:
Do both, just to be sure.

To check which version is installed (and if it is consistent):
rpm -qa | grep kde
No package should be 3.4 anymore

There is a very good Cool Solution from Novell that explains how to keep your computer up to date.

Thanks everyone, the update worked just fine. everything worked and now It runs like charm.
But I still dont have mp3 playback, although i changed to xine engine. what can it be?

EclipseAgent 01-25-2006 06:32 PM

Changing to Xine won't do anything UNLESS you have the xine package from the Packman Repository.

So again add the "Packman" repository listed on the Novell how to, and do a search for "xine" and install the lib-xine1 I think it is. (This will remove the currently installed crippled xine.

Then do a search for w32codecs and install that (also on the Packman repository).

All should then be good.

abisko00 01-26-2006 01:12 AM

If you follow the hint above, xine should be able to play mp3's. After the KDE update, a few packages are missing for mp3 support with amarok/arts. You need to get these from other sources. Have a look at this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...85#post2063585

A few messages down, I posted a list of required packages.
