How do I fix my resolution/bit rate for xfree?

I am still a n00b at linux but I am trying to get this working.

I have an old dual pentium 3 server with a riva 128 video card that I installed SuSE 9.1 (i think, whatever the latest non-professional version that is at SuSE's site).

I must have screwed up at the bit rate config spot, it was telling me to use 15 bit but I felt that wasn't right so I changed it to 16 bit and wrote the config file.

Now when I boot up, it won't logon to the GUI screen like other linux installs I have done. And when I do the STARTX command, i get the error:

Fatal Error
No Screens found.

More info on the error is that it says:
(EE) Riva128(0): Given Depth (16) is not supported by this driver.
(EE) Screens found, but none have usable configuration.

I tried running the XF86CONFIG tool but it doesn't give me the option for 15 bit and it still doesn't work.

How do I get this configured correctly? (btw, my monitor is a lcd monitor running 1024x768@60hz.)

Hi!

When you reach the prompt, login as root and type "sax2". That will call SuSE's configuration tool for X. You should find your way there since you know your monitor better then we do

Good luck!

Well I logon as root and run that command but it gives me an error:

Invalid runlevel for console mode.
Please switch to runlevel 3 first

init 3

SaX2: abort

LOL.. now what?

BTW when I run the runlevel command with no swtiches, it says N 5. I have no idea what that means or what swtiches to use.

Well I did a bit of googling and found out that I can do the init command to swtich types of runlevels.

I did init 3 and then ran the sax2 command. The sax2 command then said something about accepting these new settings so I said yes.

Then I did init 5 and the system immediatly logged into xwindows.

It appears to be working.

Cool. I fixed something!

You probably have generic VESA settings now. If that's okay... great.

You may want to edit your configuration a little to conform exactly to your hardware.

Congratulation
BTW what card and monitor was detected by sax2?
Probably you should manually select the resokution and color depth via sax. Sax should create a "propper" config file.

I'm not exactly sure how to check and see what video card and resolution and color depth were detected by sax.

However I did go into the control center and in the hardware section and it shows:
nvidia / sgs thomson (joint venture) riva 128
and its at
1024x768@75hz (i guess my lcd monitor works at 75hz, thought it would only work at 60hz)
And its 15bit depth.

I just wanted to say, good job bobo_snyder fixing your display _and_ fixing by your own hand!. Very few actually search for the answers by themselves

A little warning. Take a look on the net after your monitor specifications. If it really supports only 60hz, you may damage it by using a wrong frequency. Or so I heard

Cheers!

very good advice, i blew up a 19" dell a couple of years ago by having the wrong vertical refresh rate in my XF86Config file
you should be able to find the specs on the manufacturers website
