Help, SUSE 10.3 and win XP Boot

Hello Everybody… I have a serious problem. I have installed openSUSE 10.3 on my computer at C: driver, when windows XP are in D: driver. In order not to interrupt to the free space of partition D I made the following partitions:

Device Size Type Mount Mount By Start End
/dev/sda 74.5GB Samsung-MP0804 0 9732
/dev/sda1 15.6MB Linux native 0 1
/dev/sda2 36.3GB Extended 4889 9731
/dev/sda3 7.8MB Linux Swamp Swamp | 9732 9732
/dev/sda4 38.2GB Linux native 2 4988
/dev/sda5 36.3GB HPFS/NTFS 4989 9731

I have to admit that I’m a Windows Person with no experience at LINUX. The fact is that after installation I can’ not open Windows. I have not the option to choose between Linux and Windows. I cannot lose the XP because it contains very important files. If someone knows something that could help my problem please, give your best.

Thanks anyway.

Windows won't boot from an extended partition (or logical) unless you have a windows version on a primary partition. If you look at what you posted above you have two primary partitions with Linux (sda1 and sda4) one primary partition used as the extended (sda2) and one primary as swap (sda3). You will have to change your partitions somehow to boot windows from primary and since you don't indicate what data (if any) you have on these partitions, there is no way to really make any recommendation.

Your sda2 and sda4 partitions look reasonable in size but what were you planning to do with a 15.6MB partition? Also, a swap partition of 7.8MB? If you have decent amount of ram you may not need swap but 7MB isn't worth the loss of a primary partition. You can put the swap on a logical.

You said you can't open windows, can you boot opensuse? Post the menu.lst file from /boot/grub/ directory and you should get some help.

I'm a little confused about your setup. Which system did you install first? Have you been using XP? opensue? or did you just install them both?
