Having Trouble Connecting Wireless USB Network Adapter.
 

I'm trying to connect my SUSE computer to the internet via a wireless USB network adapter using a router hooked up to my other computer which uses VISTA. The router is connected and working properly. SUSE doesn't recognize the USB device when I connect it to the port. There is nothing wrong with the adapter because when I tried to connect it to the VISTA computer, windows recognized the new hardware. I'm all out of ideas and seriously considering setting the whole thing on fire. Anybody got any Ideas?

BTW: using SUSE 10.3
 

By the way.. The version of SUSE I am using is 10.3

before you set your card on fire, try running

as root

this will probe all your hardware and look under the network card section

you should see something that looks like your wireless card's vendor (Not always the exact model!)

once you find that, you need to find a linux driver for it

could you please post what type of card you have so we can help you find an appropriate driver?

The type of network adapter is Belkin Wireless G Network adapter F5D6050. The number that shows up under network card in yast is smc2-1211tx

I wrote a little troubleshooting guide for wireless network. It may help you.

2. I do not use usb nic but the following are some tips I clipped from other threads just in case I would need it in the future

2.1 if there is direct linux support for your usb go for it.

2.2 if there is not support use the XP drivers.

Yast/software manager/search for ndiswrapper and install

Yast/network device/network card/add/
device type: wireless
Module name: ndiswrapper

Input all the info about the wireless network and finish. The best is to configure it through the knetworkmanager

Let the ndiswrapper run with all the available options.

It's been my experience that pci wireless adapters work better than usb. Particularly ones with atheros chipsets.
