Have SUSE 9.2, but would like newer apps (firefox, gimp, etc) -- how to do w/ yast?
Hey, I am new to rpm distros. I would like to know how to install firefox 1.0.6 if my sources point to 9.2 suse mirror with an old version of firefox. Same goes for gimp. Is there a way to get newer software for an older version of suse?
Would you just point it to 9.3? I don't want to really mix the two, so I thought maybe someone had another way.
If I need another install method than yast to do this, let me know.
Sorry for the newb question, but I really havn't found an answer yet.
Some software (e.g. firefox) can be updated with YOU (YaST Online Update). Other software may be available in one of the additional rpm repositories (called 'supplementary' and in the 'projects' folder) on the SUSE mirrors. Have a look at the sticky thread about YaST sources.
You cannot simply point to the 9.3 folder, since this will most probably create a lot of dependency problems.
r3dhatter, go into yast control center, open software then change the installation source and add the following links to the repositories:
1. as ftp : packman.iu-bremen.de /suse/9.xx
2. as http: packman.rsync.zml.at/suse/9.xx
3. as http: ftp.gwdg.de /pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/9.xx
4. as ftp: mirror.mcs.anl.gov /pub/suse/i386/9.xx
5. as ftp: mirror.mcs.anl.gov /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.xx/yast-source
You will get much more packages as there are on your CD/DVD.
Cool, i'll try that in a little while. Would you say it would be safe to upgrade kde to 3.4.1 from 3.2 on suse 9.2? I am not sure how smooth that would be but it is there as a kde update for 9.2..
Also, how could I upgrade the kernel? Is there a resp for that?
and what would having multiple sources to the same software do?
When you install the links, go into yast and try " network update". It is safe. It will install only the packages which have no dependencies. When you go to "install and remove programs" first check the "Auto check" box on the bottom of the window. When you will try to install a package which needs to install some "dependencies" they will be shown in the window.
I have installed " apt4rpm" and a Synaptic. To do that go to :
