Gxine, Firefox and Suse 9.3 (Getting Very Frustrated)
I am trying to get something in Firefox to work with quicktime media. I tried installing mplayer and it will not install because of the, I think it was, gtx version which is not supported and never will be (note on the configure error for mplayer.) I tried Source and RPM(YaST) and it still didn't work.
So I turned to Xine and Gxine. I finally found all the packages for suse but somehow the ones need for Firefox and Mozilla are not installed: gxineplugin.a gxineplugin.la gxineplugin.so and to top that off I can't even find the directory where the Firefox plug-ins are. Usually it is easy enough to find but I did a search in Suse and it is not where it is suppose to be.
Why is media important to me? Well financially I cannot afford to have cable and the Internet. And over the air reception is bad not to mention everything will be digital, no analog, around 2009.) So I choose the Internet. It sucks but that's life. So I will be getting all my news, Internet TV, vlogs, etc on my computer. Anyways I stopped using XP all together recently and switched to Linux full force. Now despite the problems XP has I may end up going back to it for media purposes. SO PLEASE help me get this solved, lol. I know it can be done. I have done it before but not with Suse and I would rather keep Suse for now because everything else is working out great.

I don't know if this will help or not, but there a complete set of multimedia fixes for SuSE 9.3 that should allow it to play the media you are looking for. I can certainly play quicktime now, and the MPlayer plugin for Firefox works great.
First, make sure that that you have loaded the four multimedia option packs (available via YaST Online Update). Then, add in the "packman" install source, uninstall a number of packages, and re-install from packman. Here is the full "recipe":
1) Go to YaST, Software, Change Source of Installation. Select Add, then select HTTP from the drop down list
2) Add "packman.iu-bremen.de" as the server, suse/9.3 as the directory
3) Finish out of Change Source of Installation
4) Go to YaST Install and Remove Software
5) Delete (uninstall) Kaffeine, xine-lib, xine-ui (you may wish to uninstall MPlayer too...)
6) Install the following (Search for each one by full or partial title and then select):
- w32codecs-all
- amarok-xine
- kaffeine
- kdemultimedia30-video-xine
- libxine1
- xine-ui
- xvid
- xvid4conf
- MPlayer
- Mplayerplug-in
7) Finish out of installing the software and then reboot
This fully resolved my issues with SuSE 9.3's multimedia limitations. I hope it helps you!

I am curious about one thing. I think this was working before, maybe not. I have Real Player 10 and I though it was playing some files in firefox. On certain, and few, Real Player links I get an alert window in firefox that says.
rtsp is not a registered protocol
Is there a way around this? It is not a big deal since Mplayer does pick up most of the Real Player formats. When I get that alert window all I do is open Real Player 10 and cut and paste that url into Real Player 10 and then it works fine.

I'm afraid I can't help here. I have not encountered any Real streaming feeds - I wasn't aware that they didn't work, but since they are definitely not a widespread phenomenum, I am not too worried.
I would be interested in the answer if anyone has one though... I have run into this "unregistered protocol" message from Firefox once before, this time with rsync. How does one go about "registering" a protocol with Firefox?

I would be to. Later I will do some research and see if I can come up with anything worth while.

Webwolf
well here is the solution
1. open up firefox
2. type about:config in the address bar of firefox and hit enter on your keyboard
3. right click and click new->string then when it asks the string name type network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp
4. click ok, now type the location of realplayer for example this works for me /usr/bin/realplay
5. click ok, and try your link again as it should work no problem

Does anyone know about getting protocols like mms:/ and rtsp:/ working within firefox using plugins?
I have mplayer plugin installed which plays media over http:/ protocol fine, but if you try and play anything over mms:/ firefox complains about it not being a registered protocol.
Using 'network.protocol-handler.app.mms' allows firefox to open mms:/ streams in an external application but does anyone know how to get firefox to open these files through the mplayer plugin??
