gdb on x86_64

Can anyone help me out with getting gdb working on my x86_64 system.

When I try to debug, the variables don't show up:

#4 0x0000000000403186 in cmd_load (nargs=1, args=0x7fbfffdf38, cmd=Variable "cmd" is not available.

on my 32 bit system, everything works fine.

Should I be running a 32 bit version of gdb on my system instead?

currently I'm running:

gdb-6.2.1-1.1

# file /usr/bin/gdb
/usr/bin/gdb: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.4.1, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

I tried installing 32 bit version of gdb but got a core dump when I tried running it. I'm assuming this is because I'm in a 64 bit bash when running 32bit gdb???

Any pointers on which RPMs I might need?
