Hi,
This is my problem, I need a newer version of Gaim, one that supports SSL. I went to Sourceforge and did not see one for any Suse distribution. I tried downloading the source code . I was able to extract it no problem, however it asked for GLib files 2.0 version. I went to the site that had those files and downloaded and extracted them. That file said I needed a file called PKG_CONFIG. I went to that side and downloaded and extracted that file. I ran the ./configure command for that file. Checking the readme file it said to run the make command . When I tried to do that, I got a error msg stating bad command . At that point I ran finally crashed into the brick wall. I did not have enough knowledge to troubleshoot when I got to that point. Basically, all I want is a newer version of Gaim. I understand that you are supposed to be able to update software from Yast but I have never been able to figure out how to ge it to work. I tried adding install sources but I just don't seem to be doing it right because I can never get them to stick. I tried downloading a Gaim rpm. src that was supposed to be platform independant. When I clicked on it , I was offered the option of installing thrrough Yast. I tried that and all I got was a msg box saying to insert the Suse #2 CD. On that CD is the old version. When I clicked skip on that it just brought me back to the desktop. Any help on what I might be doing wrong or how to get the Yast update to work would be greatly appreciated. My Suse version is 9.0 Personal
Hi,
Just tried a redhat rpm. This is what I got when I tried the installation through Yast. I got a lot of unresolved requirements.
gaim requires
libgtkspell .so .0
libspell -nodules. so.1
libspell. so .4
mozilla-nss
perl (Autoloader)
perl (Carp)
perl (Exporter)
perl (XS Loader)
perl (strict)
perl (warnings)
At that point I stopped. I was offered the option to ignore the conflict and risk system inconsistencies. The Gaim rpm I downloaded was gaim-1.0.1-0rh9 i386.rpm
Any ideas of how I should proceed.
libgtkspell .so .0
libspell -nodules. so.1
libspell. so .4
Yes, for those dependencies you need to download the appropriate rpm. you can search for them on the web. Try rpm.pbone.net
Also, I installed mozillas firefox browser and this installed automatically a few dependencies that were required for gaim, such as mozilla-nss. Install firefox first, then install whatever dependencies are still missing, thats how I went about it.
It's worth trying to see if you can get all of those required packages from YaST as well...usually most of those are on your install CDs and the ones from the CDs tend to install well enough. As a last resort you could go and manually download each of those (rpmfind.net, for example), but you're a lot more likely to find more dependencies and trouble by that route.
And a tip I recently read on here elsewhere (haven't had the chance to try it) is that if you're installing packages using the terminal 'rpm' command and you get circular dependencies (i.e. pkg 1 fails because it requires pkg 2, pkg 2 fails b/c it requires pkg 1), you can put them both on the same line, i.e.
rpm -Uvh pkg1.rpm pkg2.rpm
and hope that in doing them simultaneously rpm will stop chasing its own tail and figure it out.
be sure to post when you succeed to let us know how you did it, i'm hoping to update my gaim version soon and will probably wind up looking for help myself. : )
Hi,
I want to express many thanks to all of you that helped me get through the Gaim update. The site offered by Keith Kastorff did the trick. It had an rpm for Suse which was the current version that I needed. There were also instructions for extra files that were on this site that had to be installed to insure the program would work correctly.
The extra programs were, opencdk, libtasn1 and gnutls. I also had to get gtkspell and libgtkspell.so.0 After I installed those files, I ran the gaim install and everything works great. The web site for the Gaim uptate is called Guru's RPM site. The actual link can be found in Keith's post.
I am able to launch gaim by using the run command in KDE. I have not been able as yet to find where the gaim files were installed. I tried running the find files command from KDE with the version number but no luck in finding the location of the file. I would like to create alias on the desktop with the gaim icon. Does anybody have any idea how I could track down the path to where the gaim file is located. Again , thanks for all the help.
