Just like there is are free versions of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) which are binary compatible with it: CentOS, Scientific Linux, etc, is there anything like that for SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server)?
http://www.novell.com/products/server/eval.html explains it with: NOTE: The only limitation of this evaluation software is the duration of your free access to update.novell.com. So what I think you should understand is the difference of "free" in relation to availability and a vendors business model (in terms of support).
