Free version of SLES

Just like there is are free versions of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) which are binary compatible with it: CentOS, Scientific Linux, etc, is there anything like that for SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server)?

http://www.novell.com/products/server/eval.html explains it with: NOTE: The only limitation of this evaluation software is the duration of your free access to update.novell.com. So what I think you should understand is the difference of "free" in relation to availability and a vendors business model (in terms of support).

OpenSUSE is the community version of Suse and is available for no cost.

Surely OpenSuSe is not directly comparable? Just like Fedora and RHEL

Can't see why not, the commands don't change and Linux is Linux, a desktop version can easily convert to a server version and vice versa. It's really down to what you want to do.

While they can perform the same tasks, they don't have the same security lifecycle, nor third-party certification (if that matters to you :))
