SuSE 9.2, KDE 3.4

I've Firefox and the newest Macromedia Flash. Installed correctly, I believe. My sound is ALSA (or Auto-Detect, if it will fix this somehow; it hasn't in the past!). I have an on-line flash "slide-show/animation/video" thing with audio that I need to watch for school; previously, the first slide only will have sound, but all others do not. Since a recent reinstall, it seems that (on my SuSE box) the flash has NO SOUND; my Mepis box still has that first slide sound only.

and i even created a file called... well i forgot! but I read on LQ.org somewhere that it might help.

My SuSE sources don't seem to have the package oss-alsa, which I read might help.

I have installed the libstdc++ about which I read here on LQ. None seem to want to work.

Any ideas out there?

oh, and the pop-up window which runs Flash doesn't ever really load whilst using Konqueror...

Um, try this - make sure you have all other sound devices disabled prior to launching FF. Some have told me it is a FF issue, I believe it is a more basic KDE/Linux issue.

Basically, if you have KDE or Gnome, they have sound daemons - alsa for example - which interface with the root ( for lack of a better term ) sound system. From what I understand, Alsa can play multiple sound streams. However, they all get mixed down to the root sound subsystem which can only play one stream at a time.

Firefox - like a few other apps - bypasses alsa (or whatever) and plays directly to the root sound subsystem. Thus if another sound app is playing or even has the stream open, then firefox cannot play any sound.

I've often noticed, for example, that I'll have Amarok or MPlayer in my system tray not doing anything and I try to play something in flash on firefox. It gets no sound. If I close the sound app, then restart FF, I get sound.

This doesn't seem to be an issue with MPlayer content in Firefox, such as quicktime or avi movies. My guess is because MPlayer is handling the sound and not firefox.

I have a question, do you have sound effects in KDE 3.4? Or have they stopped when you upgraded KDE to 3.4? Just curious... maybe you already know how to fix that. Just thought it might be related to that.

The "other sound apps" doesn't seem to be the issue...

And I don't have sound effects in 9.2, no. I hadn't thought of that; I didn't really miss them! OK so how do I go about fixin that? I'll have to dig for that tonight!

I like the ideas, if anyone has others too...

kde 3.4 upgrade issues and fixes

should be just what you're after for the system sounds issues.

To fix your sound effects in KDE3.4, do this:

go to /opt/kde3/bin as root and edit "startkde" (kwrite should work fine)

find this line

LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit

Now change it to look like this:

LD_BIND_NOW=true
kdeinit +kcminit +knotify

(yes now its 2 lines)

restart your computer and your sound notifications should be back. If so,I would test your flash media.

Well I tried what you said, crazibri, and I got nothing after the reboot. Then I changed my sound system's output to artsplay (as per this post:

and nothing, then I rebooted and YES I have system sounds!

But, related or not, my Firefox (and Gaim) will no longer run. The cursor bounces till it times out. I've tried to use YaST to reinstall them but I still get nothing. Since my Konqueror won't ever really load the page (it just has a "loading" thing and a progress bar that keeps moving across the page) I am not sure if this fixed my problem or not!

Again, Flash sound output was the original problem

ok so i reinstalled my gtk-qt engine (as per a post i found here on LQ) and now Firefox and Gaim both work. But STILL NO SOUND in my flash tutorials...

And my system sounds seem to lag a bit behind my actions.

I tried to change the "turn off KDE soundsystem if idle for:" option. Both turning it ON and turning it OFF locked up my system and forced a hard reboot...

still looking for ways to get this to work...

I had the same symptoms, sound elsewhere, but not in Firefox.

With 2.6 kernel (w/ alsa) /dev/dsp and mixer are sym-linked to /dev/sound/dsp and /dev/sound/mixer.

(As root) chmod 666 /dev/sound/*

Fixed it right up. (some variant of fixing user permissions has historically fixed soundcard problems)

open up /etc/mozilla-firefox/mozilla-firefoxrc
and write:
FIREFOX_DSP="none"

that fixed it for me.

Nope, still only sound on the first screen/slide...

now I have sound . . . . . .

I created a .firefoxrc file in my home directory with the following entry

FIREFOX_DSP="none"

that's all to it, now close all instances of firefox and restart it again . .. sound is back
