fetchmail problem after upgrade from 9.3-10.0

I realise this is really a fetchmail issue, but it arose straight after a distro upgrade, so I think the cause is a difference in versions somewhere.

Yesterday I upgraded to Suse 10.0 from 9.3. I use fetchmail to get mail from two different isps and several local users. since the upgrade to 10.0 it doesn't work.

the logfile gives me this:

fetchmail: awakened at Wed Oct 12 21:19:14 2005
fetchmail: 3 messages for wonderleys@curl.aunz.net at mail.curl.aunz.net (19681 octets).
fetchmail: reading message wonderleys@curl.aunz.net@mail.curl.aunz.net:1 of 3 (3986 octets) fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from mail.curl.aunz.net
fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
fetchmail: 7 messages for wonderleys at mail.spin.net.au.
fetchmail: reading message wonderleys@mail.spin.net.au:1 of 7 (1101 header octets) fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from mail.spin.net.au
fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
fetchmail: 6 messages for ross.wonderley@curl.aunz.net at mail.curl.aunz.net (35564 octets).
fetchmail: reading message ross.wonderley@curl.aunz.net@mail.curl.aunz.net:1 of 6 (4778 octets) fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from mail.curl.aunz.net
fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
fetchmail: sleeping at Wed Oct 12 21:19:28 2005

This seems to be a fairly common problem from googling on the error, but the solutions don't appear to relate to my situation. Could changing versions of Fetchmail or Postfix cause this if the config files are unchanged?

this is the result of running fetchmail -V:

This is fetchmail release 6.2.5.2+POP2+IMAP-GSS+RPA+NTLM+SDPS+SSL+OPIE+SOCKS+NLS
Fallback MDA: (none)
Linux gannet 2.6.13-15-default #1 Tue Sep 13 14:56:15 UTC 2005 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Taking options from command line

Any ideas?
