Error message for starting alsasound

/etc/init.d/alsasound start returned 1 (unspecified error).
I have been trying to get alsa to start on boot for months. I've posted so many threads to try and solve this that I'm running out of topics to ask the same question.
If I open a terminal in root and type in 'rcalsasound start' it works. Runtime says it's running, right after boot but I still can't get any sound. I've added 'rcalsasound start' to /etc/init.d boot but no luck. Can some please give me the answer to this dilemma?

have you tried compiling alsa from source on your machine?

download the source code, easy enough to find it on google, after that i'll need to know what distro you're running
