I am trying my first Linux installation. I am trying to install Suse 10 on a PC that was built about 2 years ago. Fairly early on in the install process, I get the following error message:
Installation of package patch-2.5.9-148.i586 failed.
net-tools-1.60-561.i586.rpm installed ok
netcat-1.10-872.i586.rpm installed ok
master-boot-code-1.6-7.i586.rpm installed ok
dosfstools-2.11-2.i586.rpm installed ok
dos2unix-3.1-304.i586.rpm installed ok
patch-2.5.9..i586.rpm installed failed
rpm output:
error:read failed: input/output error (5)

Well, how did you get the CD? Try copying (but not file-by-file)/reburning it. If you copy it, try to do it using some drive and software that can read damaged disks. If it cannot be read - try contacting support. If you want just to check if it is corrupted, try to copy patch-2.5.9-148.i586.rpm from CD to HDD.

patch? Yes, you can just fetch the single rpm from website (or copy from cd image) and install it using rpm. There is a possibility that you'll have to install by hand something which doesn't install until you have patch - so check output..
