Im a bit confused. You tried editing with what?
And you are using a Suse Linux 9.x/10.x or Enterprise version or what?

I havent had any problems in editing xorg.conf in suse. Well actually with SLED I couldn't find a pico or nano, so had to manually download and install from SL 10.1. installation source, but other than that haven't had problems.

I would use nano as root in a terminal but you still didn't say what editor you were trying to use (or is that what you meant by 'are you saying i should use gedit',) and it's not '/etc.x11.xorg.conf' it's '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' and capitalization and punctuation are very important!

if you are trying to edit this file as your normal user it won't let you save the changes this is supposed to happen. you must be root.

Open up a terminal window

Code:
su
(enter password)
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf <-- straight terminal editing
kwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf <-- if you're using KDE
gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf <-- if you're using GNOME
