I am having trouble getting my dual network cards configured through the yast interface. I have one network connected to the internet, the (internal) router ip for that is 11.12.1.1. I have two suse 64 bit 10.2 boxes, each with two network cards, the 100 mbit cards on each (set up for internet access) have ips of 11.12.1.110 and 11.12.1.120 respectively. THe two suse boxes also each have a second gigabit card, with addresses of 11.12.2.110 and 11.12.2.120 respectively. These are on gigabit switch (not a router), so there is no gateway on the 11.12.2.xxx network. The trouble is that when I configure the 100 mbit cards (on the 11.12.1.xxx network) for internet access, the gateway address and name server address carries over to the 11.12.2.xxx network setup, and when I delete it from the 11.12.2.xxx setup, the addresses also get deleted from the 11.12.1.xxx network setup. Can any point me where to go to fix this? I am comfortable working in the terminal, I just dont know where I need to go to change this (or even if its possible).
Do you have the gigabit switch connecting the two hosts and the 100 MB Nics both connected to a router, or are you just using one host to connect to the internet?
If it is the former, the default gateway address is the IP address of the router. There is just one default gateway address for each host. So don't worry about the same gateway appearing in the config for each NIC. The route will select the device assigned when the destination IP doesn't match either 11.10.1 or 11.10.2. You might want to post the output of /sbin/route to verify that the 100 MB NICs are used for the default gateway. Also, are you using a netmask of 255.255.255.0?
In the SuSE firewall configuration, select "external" for the 100MB NICS, and internal for the Gigabit NICs. You might want use static IP addresses on the Gigabit NICs and add entries in the /etc/hosts files. This is to prevent the host names from resolving to the 100 MB NICs, since if both hosts are connected to a switch and the routers switch, you have two routes to the other host.
If you are using one of the hosts to access the internet, then the internet connected host needs to have IP forwarding enabled. The IP address for the connected host will be the gateway address for the second host.
I noticed that these IP addresses are public IP addresses. You might want to use a private range for the Gigabit NICs if you are using it for private Host to Host access.
Sorry Tytower, I dont quite understand your question.
Jschiwal, thanks for the input. Yes, the two 100 mbit cards are on a router, the internet gateway is on that router. The gigabit switch just has the two boxes, plus the file server. Here is what happened this weekend: I managed to get the two gigabit cards talking to each other, but when I did that I lost connection to the internet. I set the gateway on the cards to a nonexistent address, 11.12.2.1, and they immediately started communicating. I left the gateway for the 100 mbit cards alone, but I am confident that the gateway on those was changed by the software to 11.12.2.1 also, and thats why I lost internet. Its like I cant use a different gateway on each card. Any ideas?
I was thinking maybe I could get a gigabit router and daisy chain that to the 100 mbit network?
i just found a way out , i uninstalled network manager and now both cards are working great ....... sometimes tools that are designed to help us become a major hurdle :-)
