Does this exist?
 

Here is what I'm looking for. I simply want to be able to have my updater linked to a site which has just about every itty bitty thing out there for updating Linux. When I find a new little gem I'd like to install, I'd like to be able to simply click on it and install it. If there are other packages needed....THEN BY GOD THEY ARE DOWNLOADED TOO! If this is possible...Can someone please for Pete-Sake help me to get it going before I lose what little sanity I "might" have left?:cry:

I would recommend using the http://rpm.pbone.net website. If there are dependencies, the list of dependencies listed are links to where you can find them. The site also uses java to examine which dependencies are satisfied and which you need to install.

Goto this site and look for RPMs labeled SMART

Download the five files you need and install it. That will probably give you the kind of control you are looking for.

Apt for Suse is also another option.

Nine...I'm trying out the Smart system.....However, it is still updating channels. It has been around :20 minutes now. Is this normal?



An hour later and still updating?

Depends on your speed with the internet. If your on dial up it can take a long while. But it should be displaying a progress bar. If your not seeing that then something is not right.

Ok, it says there are pending updates...but I can't figure out how to access them. I tried clicking on ksmartray, but nothing happens.

Not sure why SMART isn't working for you but keep it mind it is a beta project.

As for the updates. I never could get 10.1 to load. But they did put out an update for the update software. Lots of bugs in the new package management system. Personally I'm sticking with 10.0 as it is more stable.

Oh if you take a command prompt as root and do

smart update

what happends?

Ok...How exactly would I go about doing that?

There should be a little computer icon on kde panel named Konsole. Hit that and it opens a command prompt.

Type su at that prompt and then your root password. Your should now have a prompt with a #. That tells you that your are root the superuser.(get it su = superuser)

at that prompt type smart update

Hmmmm....Last night I tried that very same thing. However, this morning, it worked. But, it says there are not any new updates even though the ksmartray says there are pending ones..

That's because we anit done yet.

Now do

smart upgrade

Don't answer yes to the prompts yet. I just want to see if you are offered updates.
