Does SUSE use rpms or Debian type packages?

I aquired a SUSE distro and am wondering if I want to try it out. RPMs proved long ago to be beyond my tolerence level. I liked Debian but was completely unable to get my printer working BUT I liked the Debian type of package system.

What am I facing with SUSE. Any great advances in Linux in the last year since I've used Linux?

SUSE uses RPMs, unfortunately.

Debian Etch is much more stable and usable now than a year ago; it's just as easy as any other distro to install. Give a net-install a try if you have a fast internet connection. Otherwise, SimplyMEPIS or Ubuntu are good options when it comes to getting a user friendly Debian-based system.

Personally I don't see much difference between using RPMs and DEBs. As long as you use a good package manager, the underlying packaging system does not really matter. If you are familiar with apt/synaptic, then I suggest you try using SMART on openSUSE.
