DIVX

A month ago, I decided to give up Windows and give it a try with Linux, specially because I am running AMD 64-bit and Windows does not yet have a 64-bit OS released (full non-beta version).
I read a lot of Linux documentation and man pages in the mean time and I am enjoying my Suse 100%. I love the way filesystems are organized, the security features, the control over the system. But there is one last final reason why I cannot give up my Windows yet - I cannot play DIVX movies.

How do I configure my Suse 9.2 x86_64 to play video encoded in DIVX?? I found some webpages with some information for 32-bit Linux, which doesn't work for me... Please help me get rid of Microsoft for good!

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Ruljo

First of all, you must be able to install 32bit packages.
But Packman provides also a 64 bit Mplayer rpm for Suse
packman.links2linux.org

or just add following source to Yast:
ftp://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/9.2/
and then install Mplayer with Yast.

Yeah MPlayer will let you play Divx videos on Linux.

And thanks again for such a rapid response (16min, wow, very impressive) )

Have fun!

I downloaded the mplayer rpms (for my Linux and CPU architecture) and all the dependencies from packman.links2linux.org, but when I try to install mplayer with Yast, Yast crashes without any error message; the window simply closes. I tried rpm -i and I got the following error:

warning: MPlayer-1.0pre6a-pm.1.x86_64.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 3ab2ce5e
error: Failed dependencies:
liblzo.so.1()(64bit) is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre6a-pm.1

The weird thing is, the requested library is located in /usr/lib, which is not in my PATH (could this be a problem?):

user@hostname-linux:~> ls /usr/lib/liblzo*
/usr/lib/liblzo.so.1 /usr/lib/liblzo.so.1.0.0

This is my PATH:

user@hostname-linux:~> echo $PATH
/home/user/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin

The weird thing is, Kaffeine (xine based player) opens a DIVX encoded movie but the screen is blank while the sound work. When I tried running Kaffeine from the CLI, the following message was displayed in the shell after closing Kaffeine:

user@hostname-linux:~> kaffeine
You are trying to decode an theorastream. At the moment, theora is in
development. If the stream could not be played back go to
http://xine.sourceforge.net and get the latest release of xine.
This release will play back streams which have been encoded with libtheora-cvs.
user@hostname-linux:~> QObject::insertChild: Cannot reparent a widget, use QWidget::reparent() instead

Since I cannot install Mplayer, I'll try downloading the latest version of xine and try again. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with Mplayer rpm??

Thanks a lot and have fun!

did you add the source to yast and installed it with install and remove software or downloaded the rpm from rpmfind.net/rpmseek.com/packman's site and then installed it?
You should add Packman to Yast's sources and then install new progz with Install and remove software. Then Yast will try to solve dependencies for you.
