difficult to install new programs

Hi!

I'm quite new to Linux and Suse. My first distro was Mandrake 10 but it didn't cope with my wlan so I changed.

After using SUSE 9.1 Personal some while I would like to install more programs. That was not as all as easy as on Mandrake. It doesn't matter what I try, YAST2 always says that there is one or another package missing, but doesn't do anything about it. (Mandrake downloaded and installed missing packages automagically.) There is a C-compiler missing, or it's the wrong version of KDE (even though I downloaded very recently) or there is a library missing and I can't find SUSE-rpms, which is very frustrating. As for the KDE-thing; I wanted some of the extra programs for KDE, but YAST2 told me I had the wrong version and would need to uninstall KDE and reinstall, which I wouldn't really dare to do.

It's very discouraging when I try to fix one error, like for exemple trying to install a missing library from source using make command, and the computer says that there another thing missing, and then another to a seemingly endless chain of libraries.

Should I reinstall and choose SUSE 9.1 Pro instead? Will things be easier then? Or should I rather switch to Debian or back to Mandrake? Or have I got everything wrong?

I'd be really thankful for hints and suggestions! :)

olsmat,

If you have the choice to go the Pro version please do it. It'll make your future life simpler.

In terms of additional packages you can find SuSE applicable .rpms here http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/2/simple/2. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked except for SuSE.

You can find a pretty got listing of Apps @ the Guru site @ http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-navigation.php.

To install all your news Apps, right click on the .rpm that you have downloaded, clicks Actions, Install with YaST.

Any away you go...
