DHCP set-up for ADSL internet on Suse 9.2

Can anyone please help me fill in the DHCP server wizard on Suse 9.2? This is for ADSL connection to the internet via an ethernet router, using a laptop which is not part of any network.

I'm new to Linux but have already given up on installing my ADSL modem, having been told it was much easier via an ethernet router. But I still need some help! I'm looking for answers to these questions:

Domain name
The domain part of my e-mail address is globalnet.co.uk but the ADSL modem for Windows uses a completely different username, domain name and password. Which one should I put here? If it's the Globalnet one, should I write it as Globalnet or globalnet.co.uk?

Time Server
What is this, do I need to include it and where can I find it?

Print Server
What is this, do I need to include it and where can I find it?

WINS Server
Am I right in thinking this should be left blank if the router is to be used only for Linux?

just that I understand you right:

a ) you've got the router ( also a pc or a little "black box" ? ) running already, DHCP server running

b) you just want to get access to the internet on your linux PC via the router

If you could fill in the missing information I guess I can help you, as I've got suse 9.2 and 8.2
running on my computer and I also use an internet router ( zyxel prestige 334 ).
Some time ago I used an ordinary PC for that as well.

In case the router is up and running with dhcp server all you need to do in suse 9.2 is:

in case I understood you wrong, just ask again more specifically.

Okay. Thanks for your interest.

I bought a Netgear router to replace my USB modem and now I'm trying to instal it. The instructions say, "Your computer needs to be configured for DHCP" and that's what I'm trying to do - first things first! Then I'll see what else I need to do to get on the internet...

ah. ok !

then all you need to do on your suse 9.2 machine
is to set up the network card with yast as indicated in the pictures
I posted earlier. I assume that it was/wil be detected automatically. everywhere it says sth like "get yadda yadda via DHCP" just enable that stuff. like "get iP address automatically", "get nameserver automatically", "get hostname automatically" ...
it might be necessary to add the router's IP address (manual) as the "default gateway" of the linux machine.

no need to configure the dhcp server on that computer.

If the netgear router is still in factory default configuration its dhcp server should be turned on by default. the next time you reboot your linux computer ( or restart the network with "/etc/init.d/network restart" ) it should get an IP address from your netgear box. as soon as that is done you must be able
to ping the router.

THEN I assume the manual says something about the netgear's default IP address and the WEB interface password.

it should be accessible with any browser via http://router.ip.goes.here

then comes the part of configuring the DSL dialup stuff.
but that should be straight forward. just username, password, type of connection ( usually pppoe ).

if that's done you should be able to surf the internet from your pc.

firewall should be enabled as well. preferably on the router.

Thanks - this looks great! But I'm going to have to take it one step at a time or it will add to my confusion.

My first question is about the second of the pics you kindly sent - the one headed "Network cards configuration". It tells me that I have two network cards available. They are:
Acer Incorporated [ALI] BCM4401 100Base-T
and
Intel MIM2000/Centrino.
(The computer's an Acer.)

Any idea which one I should configure? Or should I do both?

I had the same problem as you: when i configured the two network devices (laptop); the connection wouldn't work. So install just one at a time.
If you have a cable connection:
Acer Incorporated [ALI] BCM4401 100Base-T
Wireless:
Intel MIM2000/Centrino

Great! Many thanks! This is a laptop too. I don't need the wireless one, so I'll just do the cable one.

Whew! At last I think I'm beginning to make some progress...

VICTORY!!! I'm sending this from Linux via the ethernet router, so I've got everything to work. I've already gone to my football club's fan site (www.bsad.org for Watford, if you must know) and now I'm here.

Fantastic to be able to start work with this at last. My eternal gratitude goes to everyone who helped me get past the obstacles along the path.
