default groups for new users (SuSE 9.2)

Hi folks,
OK. I decided to try SuSE 9.2. During installation, I added a new user to the system when given the option to do so. Then, after installation, I logged in as that user, but I had no sound. I got frustrated poking and checking around to find that everything was OK (sound card was detected, module was loaded, speakers were ok, etc). I had absolutly no control over sound under my new system. WTH was wrong?
Then, I logged in as root. Boom! Sound worked perfectly!
I checked the properties of the new user I created during installation to find that, by deafult, SuSE only makes it part of the groups "users, video". Noticing there was also a group called "audio", my intution led me to think that making my user part of this group would solve my sound problem. Indeeed, it did.

On the other hand, I also ran into an issue with the "useradd" command. It does not create the /home/... directory for the new user by default. Thus, X will throw some scary error messages and refuse to run.

I've been a Mandrake / Red Hat user for a few years before. I had never had troubles adding new users to my system. The default options worked just fine, which does not seem to be the case with SuSE. At some point I like this because I get to know my system a lot better, but I think Novell shall make it a little less troublesome for those of us who have not tried SuSE before.

Now, this is pretty much my first "serious" encounter with SuSE; I've found out it has very nice features, so this time I'm so determined to continue with my plan of settling down with it. However, running into this kind of issues is making me hesitate a bit... will I be running into many more similar problems with SuSE?

For instance, I'm having troubles now making an ftp connection to some server. I get to login but then none of the commands I type (ls, passive, etc) gets recognized and my connection is terminated. (I have no iptables rules on the system, in case you are wondering)... However, I could perfectly connect to that server when I had Mandrake on my machine. Am I running into another "user groups" problem? ...just in case, the ftp server is up and running! I can login from any other machines on the LAN, except from my SuSE box

Any comments would be appreciated!
Thanks!

First "man useradd" ;-) SuSE uses -m to create the home directory.

Believe me I always RTFM! All I was saying is that in distributions such as Mandrake/ Red Hat, if you issue the "useradd" command w/o any options, it automatically creates the user's home directory.
Just making a comparison...
