Connecting a SLED 10 box to a XP PC - file configurations ?

A while back I connected a Ubuntu (7.04) machine directly to an XP machine using a crossover patch cable ( neither was to have connection to the Internet). Apart from editing the Network Connection on the XP machine and issuing

Code:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
command. I also had to edit the Ubuntu /etc/network/interfaces file.
Now I was wondering , is there an equivalent file in SuSE which needs to be edited ? I've issued the ifconfig command on the SuSE box and it seems to be accepting connections from the XP machine with no problems at all. I've even rebooted and switched off / on the SuSE box and it will still happily accept connections from XP. I take it from this that no file needs to be configured unlike the case with the Ubuntu /etc/network/interfaces file. I read somewhere that older versions of SuSE had a /etc/rc.config file but this does not seem to exist on SLED 10.

Thanks

Uncle.

Hello, running the ifconfig command to assign a static IP is only good until you re-boot. (You might have already known that?) But in SLED, I believe the file you are looking for resides under....
/etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-<macaddress_of_card>. The file is pretty self explanatory, just put "static" under "BOOTPROTO". The only other info the file needs is the netmask, it will pick up your Broadcast from your netmask. If you are just connected straight to another PC via crossover, there should be no need to edit your routes. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. The odd thing is that I assigned a static IP using ifconfig but even when I reboot and /or switch off reboot I can connect (using Putty) from my WinXP machine with no problems at all. It seemed strange that this was possible even though I had not edited any IP configuration file such as /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth. I find this most puzzling !!!

I agree, that is strange that it kept that IP after a re-boot. But, I guess thats a bonus. I suppose if for some reason it does loose your IP, you at least can find the config file to edit it now. You could also use YAST to configure it, but for me personally, editing files manually is always easiest. (In most cases).
Thanks
