configure suse machine in a windows network
 

my PC is dual boot suse 9.3/XP and the machine is part of our institution LAN, please can anyone tell how to configure it so that i can see all workgroops/PCs on the network, access shared files and drives on remote PC's.

i already configured the ethernet card(IP address) .

You need to set up the SAMBA client, which you can configure through YaST.

And typing "samba suse howto" into google yields this page as the first result:

Everything you need should have been loaded with the default setup. Either turn off you firewall (rcSuSEfirewall2 stop) or read my other posts to numerous others regarding how to set it up to work with Samba.

After you down you firewall, go to Konqueror and put in "smb:/" in the address bar. That should give you list of what is available.

KNetAttach is also a helpful program.

Can you post a link or RPM name for that firewall2 high port patch you recommended to Apachedude? I still haven't seen it show up in You. Thanks!

SuSEfirewall2 update

Get this update (it's an optional update so be sure your Yast doesn't filter out Optional Updates if you get it from Yast) then find the line that says:

FW_ALLOW_INCOMING_HIGHPORTS_UDP=""

and change it to:

FW_ALLOW_INCOMING_HIGHPORTS_UDP="137"

This will allow you to use SuSEfirewall and still see your SMB shares in the Network Browser. Again the KNetAttach program makes SMB connections very simple. IT's also good for GUI ssh connections as well!

It looks like the patch works but I did encounter some wierdness...
YOU won't let me get to that patch. After a couple of false starts with a user defined address, it appeared that the hidden portion of the URL that YOU appends just wouldn't let me get there and when I truncated my URL enough to satisfy YOU it saw other optional patches but not that one. Not sure what that's all about.

I pulled the patch into my home directory with Firefox, right clicked it and directed Yast to install it. That seemed to work okay and I later confirmed with rpm -q SuSefirewall2 that it is installed.

I went to Yast Firewall, shut down the firewall and tried to remove the 1025:65535 hack in allowed services. It went through all the motions but the hack wouldn't go away.

I then went to the Sysconfig editor, removed the hack and installed the 137 port address. I then returned to Firewall, confirmed that the UDP hack was gone and restarted the firewall. Network browsing found the workgroup and newly shared directories and files on the Windows network machines.

Sorry if this sounds like newbie madness, but I am what I am.
