My computer lost sound after an SLES 12 reboot.
It cannot be (or cannot solely be) because,
e.g., I trashed my PulseAudio configuration
files without realizing it, because even
"yast2 sound" fails to produce a sound at
the "play test sound" phase, even though
PulseAudio is not used there. For the same
reason, it cannot be a matter of unreadable
devices (although it may be a matter of
nonexistent devices), since, when I run
"yast2", I do so as root. And it cannot
be a hardware problem, since when I reboot
the same hardware into Ubuntu 14.04 the
sound works perfectly. Has anyone seen
this before? If so, how did you fix it?
The lspci command -- like yast2 -- reports
that my audio device is an Intel Corporation
82801JI (ICH10 Family).
Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

The sound doesn't work regardless of whether I
am logged in as jay or root, so it has nothing
to do with the $HOME/.pulse directory, which,
in any event, has not changed. Moreover, even
yast2, as I said, cannot play a test sound,
although it thinks it has.
Install pavucontrol and make sure that you're outputting to correct device. Since you're not getting an error message and applications think they are producing sounds it is likely sound is sent to a wrong device.
Where do I get pavucontrol? Remember, this is
SLES, not OpenSuSE, so "zypper in" doesn't work.
You have to download source and compile.
(which explains why I don't just reinstall my
system and get sound working that way -- I've
put in much too much work already, downloading
and building the software I need.)
If you want to install third-party software, add additional software repositories to your system. By default, the product repositories such as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server-DVD 12 SP1 and a matching update repository are automatically configured after you have registered your system. For more information about registration, see Section 6.7, SUSE Customer Center Registration or Section 17.8, Registering Your System. Depending on the initially selected product, an additional repository containing translations, dictionaries, etc. might also be configured.
