cinepaint-0.20-1.tar.gz


hello,
i would like to use the program cinepaint so downloaded the tar file to my home folder. As i am a nebie, can someone please explaine how i 1) extract the file and to where and 2)then what to do to make it work....soz if this is a bit simple, but not even my suse 10 book covers it...lol

You can extract the tarball

1. from console using the tar command (options for the tar command: see >man tar<)

2. with the archiver of kde or gnome

configuration and installation: see the readme in the extracted files.

erm...

hello,
i can view whats inside the tarball, but i need to know how to extract it. The readme file is just useless, so i also need to know what to do when i have extracted it. Ps i am a newbie to tar files, so go easy...ta.

on console as root:

tar -xzf cinepaint-0.20-1.tar.gz

usually the source program is configured with ./configure and compiled with ./make.
The configuration and compiling is discribed in "readme".

Sorry if I disagree here: root permissions are not required until you install the software. Until then, you can perform all steps as user in your homedirectory.

BTW: compiling from source may be a little tricky for a beginner. In SUSE, you may need to install some devel-packages that are not installed by default (if ./configure returns errors).

That dependes on the permissions of the downloaded file....

It surely does! But permissions can be changed...
I simply wanted to point out that compiling does not require root permissions.
