Changing partition size

Someone told me that I would be able to adjust the size of partitions, in order to manipulate limited disk space. However, now, in the Partitioner of Yast2 (10.0), it is saying that this is not possible. Is there any way to accomplish this?

I have all of these updates which need to be installed, but the initial partitioning setup gave me very little free space within my Linux (root?) partition. Now I have made more space and ready to just delete my whole Windows partition altogether, but I am also wondering if I will have to install the updates to a different partition than where Linux installed. Is that possible?

What exactly is the partitioner saying? What exactly is your current partition setup like? What exactly are you attempting to do? Are you running it as root? You have to give more details if you want anyone to help you.

Most partitioners can resize partitions, but they can't move them around. That is, they can't change the point where the partition starts on the disk, but they can change where they end. If there's another partition immediately following the one you want to change, then you are unlikely to be able to make it any bigger.

Total Cylinders 1026
hda 1 From 1 to 708 (Windows)
hda 2 From 709 to 772 (swap)
hda 3 From 773 to 1026 (Linux)

In initial setup, Windows was automatically given an extra gig of memory for breathing room. Now that I have cleaned it up even further, there is approximately 1.5 gigs free in the Windows partition. I would like to decrease the size of the Windows partition and increase the size of the Linux partition, in order to accomodate updates.

When I try to edit hda 1, it gives me a little message in the corner saying, "On already-existing partitions, you can change everything except the start and size of the partition."

I just tried resizing the Windows partition, after unmounting it in My Computer/Konqueror, and it gave me an error message saying that it is still mounted.

Given what you said about resizing, I am inclined to believe that it isn't even possible to do, under these circumstances, and I should probably just uninstall Linux and start all over, placing the Linux partition in hda 1 rather than 3, which will allow me to expand the size of it.

Is there another place to unmount a partition other than under My Computer/Konqueror? Whenever I try to unmount hda 1, it apears that is being unmounted, but then when I go to Yast and try to resize it, it keeps saying that it is still mounted.

In doubt, always use the command-line:

Code:
su #to become root
****** #root password
umount /dev/hda1
exit
EDIT: As you've already realized, you can't expand the Linux partitions. The only chance to utilize the extra space will be to add a new partition (hda4), on which you can mount some part of the Linux tree (e.g. /var).
