cdrom: dropping to single frame dma

I get the error "cdrom: dropping to single frame dma" in my dmesg output when I start ripping cd's to .wav's almost all the time. The cdrom (actually it's a dvdrecorder NEC 2510) works fine and fast all other times until I rip some audio tracks. I get a large performance drop in ripping transfer speeds once this happens. I can't seem to narrow it down to anything in particular. The CD's are sometimes brand new w/o a scratch on them and they still do it.
I was thinking that if modprobe reloads modules I may be able to fix this on the fly, but I don't know what module to modprobe.
Has anyone else seen this behavior or know how to fix it?
