In SuSE, edit the hostname in YaST under your specific network card. Be sure you uncheck the box that has DHCP set your machine name.

i finally did it (in YaST) however i did not uncheck dhcp set, im not sure what difference that would make. after changing it i thought i messed up the machine, it was going really slow and and crashed after a reboot (this marks my first crash in linux). but after a few more reboots the system suddenly returned to its original state. with the new hostname.
