When I load a cd on suse 10.1 I always select "open in new window" from the dialogue but I always get this message -
Code:
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
What does it mean?
There were no entries regarding cds in fstab after I installed suse and I've tried adding my own but they are ignored, the cds aren't mounted to the mountpoints I specified.
There's nothing wrong with that message, it's completely normal and shows you that the CD is being mounted. Please post the line of your fstab that starts with /dev/hdc. There must be one, otherwise mount would complain that it couldn't find /dev/hdc in the file.
These are the two entries that I entered after finding them in fstabs from other distros. They are both actually commented out since they are being ignored.
Code:
/dev/hdc /media/cdwriter auto users,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdwriter auto noauto,user,exec,nodev,iocharset=utf8 0 0
But seriously, after the install there were no entries for cds in fstab. Fedora Core also has no cd entries but they mount without these errors.
There's nothing that helps in /etc/hal.
But upon further inspection I've noticed a some things.
All the cd's I was trying to mount were rewritables that were all burned from k3b.
I've tried with a couple of music cds and they are mounting ok.
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
What does it mean?
Means that a CD-ROM / DVD-ROM media must always be mounted as read-only, you can't possibly do otherwise.
Here's the entry from my fstab, it should be respected and not conflict with automount.
Code:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,users,ro,unhide 0 0
