cannot mount DVD ISO as loop device - but plays directly with VLC

Hi there

I can't mount a DVD ISO image file as a loop device -- fails - however using DOLPHIN and right mouse click on the ISO image it will allow you to open it directly in VLC -- then the DVD will play OK. (ISO image is / decrypted / de-regionalizxed DVD ripped with AnyDVD (windows program)

I rip the DVD in a Windows Virtual M and then ply on my Linux machine. Keeping the ISO images on an external HDD means no more physical media once I've ripped the DVD and it maintains all the original DVD features (menus, subtitles, audio tracks etc). External 2TB HDD's are cheap now.

I'll have a go with DVD ripping via WINE or are there any Linux equivalents for AnyDVD / CloneDVD etc.

Cheers

why so? What message? How do you do it? Are you root when doing so? Why the loop device?
I do that quite frequently (without using a loop device), and usually it works fine:

Code:
$ sudo mount dvdimage.iso ./mountpoint
Then mount tells me that the filesystem is mounted read-only, which is fine with an ISO.

Yes, VLC will happily accept an image file of a DVD in place of the disc itself.

Depending on what copy protection method the DVDs use, most CD/DVD burning suites will be okay. Most DVDs are CSS-encrypted only, and when VLC is installed, you've already got the CSS decryption library libdvdcss2 on your system. Brasero, for instance, which comes with Gnome, will read and copy CSS-encrypted DVDs without your noticing, because it simply uses libdvdcss2 if available.

Bear in mind that decrypting DVDs that way may be illegal in your country.

Hi there
a standard automatic system software update seemed to fix it -- don't know what was missing or what package fixed it but all working now. I seemed to notice some package being updated --fuse-iso or something like that.

("The wonders of Linux" !!!)

Cheers
