This may be a stupid question. I installed suse 9.1 and am happy with it but I was under the impression that with the online update you could update from 9.1 to 9.2. But I cant seem to do it. Or do I need to have the 9.2 disc?

You definately need the boot cd (download iso from ftp site)
Then after making boot cd and booting up, when the dialogue about how and where from specify "ftp" and the suse site, or a good mirror.
Must say this is slow especially if more than one upgrade is required.
I just made my own local mirror which I point to for any of my machines.
Well how much disc space did your mirror require? How long did it take to install your mirror?
I am a very experimental and often get myself in a jam. As a result I have to re-install a lot. That's why i want discs!!! ftp takes too long! My very own local mirror is my answer?
sorry to jump your post mate but i have downloaded the 9.2 cd and it just wont work for me! proper annoying! 9.1 scan the HDD and Floppy in seconds but 9.2 takes about an hour to scan HDD floppy and what ever else it does!

5.8 GB, thats without the DVD iso.
How long did it take to install your mirror? A good day to download and thats 1MB broadband.
If you have a dvd writer its probably quicker to download the DVD iso and burn that - 3 to 4 GB I think.
The main ftp is just files with only the boot cd iso, no other cd images.
If you go the mirror route, you could probably getaway without downloading the source rpms to save on time and disk space

Really shouldn't take that long. Are you installing via ftp perchance?
OK I want to download the dvd but i've read that a large download that size sometimes isn't allowed by a PC. How do I know if my PC will allow a download that size? Is it a software issue?

A few options here for how you download:
Use FTP - you can resume a download after pausing or getting cut off
Use a download manager - I'm not sure about Firefox but as a (rebel?) Opera user I get to stop/start/resume downloads.
-Other managers available outside of browsers include KBear etc
Maybe I should add a new point to this discussion:
To update 9.1 to 9.2 via FTP, you need the small boot ISO. Once you boot this ISO, you will be asked if you want to update the current version or run a new installation via FTP. In both cases, only the selected packages will be downloaded. Neither the full set that is on the large DVD (3.3GB), nor the whole FTP version (>5GB).
This may be an option, althought I would always recommend a fresh installation to avoid mix-up of configuration files.

Quite right about the boot iso.
I think Zeke_1 has probably found out about doing the upgrade by ftp - it takes an age as it decides which packages are required all via ftp.
Should be "quite quick" once it's decided though as you say abisko00, it should only download the required packeages.
Not had a problem so far by upgrades. Gone right from 8.0 upto 9.2 on my old box, a step at a time mind you. No big leaps!
Is there any documentation on the mini-ISO method of upgrade? I'm trying to load my PCMCIA Wireless SMC network card that works fine in 9.1 off the hard disk. I can't figure out how to load the correct modules with this boot CD.
