Unhappy Can see router and other boxes, alas no internet

I am running SuSe 9.1 on an old celeron box. I can ping the router and the two windows boxes on my lil home net (and they can ping me). I just can't get to the internet through the DSL modem. The windows boxes can get out just fine.

I am a newbie and any help would be appreciated.

What kind of router do you have? Please post the output of '/sbin/route' and '/sbin/ifconfig' (both run as root) so we can see your current network settings. Also, what errors do you get when you try to ping google.com? If it complains about being able to resolve the domain, you may need to adjust /etc/resolv.conf.

Try 'route add default gw 192.168.1.1'.

This is a problem I've often encountered in the past. DHCP sets up the IP address and netmask, but not the routing or DNS. On some systems it works, on others it doesn't. I never figured out why...

The quick-and-dirty fix is to open Networking in YAST, and enter default route and DNS directly into the network settings. As most commercial routers support DNS, both of these entries will be your router IP address.
