I am trying to install smart package manager using this guide http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=...ackage_Manager. I got up to "Automating for Gnome" and then when i run gedit it sais command not found. I tries which gedit and it returned nothing. As I am new in Linux I don't really understand what gedit does but could I not have gedit but have something equivalent in my system? I installed SuSE 10.2 as it came from the official site. Any other suggestions? Thank you.

Gedit is a plain text editor. If you did not find it with 'which gedit' then I would suspect it is not installed. There are lots of editors for linux. Gedit is a nice one I install on my systems, even though I run KDE mostly. You can install it with your package manager.

If there is something you need to edit before you get gedit installed, almost all distros install 'vi' and or 'vim' by default. They take a little getting used to, but for simple changes, they will run without the X server, or with it.

camorri i installed it with yast.I thought it was only a command. Cheers.For the record just search in yast->software management and you will find it. Click on the square next to gedit and press accept.

you could allways replace the gedit with kedit if you are using KDE, Kedit is just the kde default editior like gedit is the gnome one.
i personally prefer kedit as it has better syntax highlighting but thats my personal preferance.

if you want somthing truly universal you need to learn vi. not that its too difficult. there are plenty of good tutorials out there,

you can nearlly allways find some version of vi on just about any *nix system,

i have used it on various linuz distros, a mates BSD box, my housemates Macbook and the ancheint solaris 2.6 boxes at work!
