Can't start X in 10.0. Symbol lookup error.

Greets to all.

I'm experiencing problems after updating some gnome packages (control center, desktop etc) in Suse 10.0, where X will not start after I perform a normal login at the splash screen. I get the following dialog box error:

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds...etc, with the .xsession-errors file displayed below as:

/etc/X11/xim: Checking wether an input method should be started.
INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method).
Trying to start a default input method for the locale.
/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session: symbol lookup error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgconf-2.so.4: undefined symbol: g_slice_alloc

I checked my Xorg.0.log, which looked OK, and just to be safe, I copied an old xorg.conf file I knew was OK into /etc/X11 just to be sure. I am also seeing the nVidia splash screen for a moment just before the standard login prompt as per usual.

When I try to start X from the command line after booting from failsafe mode the same error listed in .xsession-errors file is displayed and X fails to start.

Any ideas on this one? I've been trawling the web and numerous forums for the last 5 hours trying to find a solution. If anyone could help me out I would be truly thankful, as I really don't want to have to reinstall...

Many thanks,

- Perps.

Update: I managed to boot into Window Manager session successfully and I think I resolved the libgconf issue, as when I try to start x now it just hangs. When I kill the server, I am droped back to the terminal and the following error is displayed:

INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_US ... There is no default input method for the current locale.

Any indeas?

Many thanks,

- Perps

Update2: I fogot to mention before that my keyboard layout was also wrong (was set to UK setup instead of standard US), so I used a Window Manager session to get into YaST again and change. After successfully changing my keyboard layout, I am now returned to the previous error when trying to start X:

/etc/X11/xim: Checking wether an input method should be started.
INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method).
Trying to start a default input method for the locale.
/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session: symbol lookup error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgconf-2.so.4: undefined symbol: g_slice_alloc

Please help!

I'm having a similar problem. Please see my post here.

If anyone can assist me, I will be very grateful as I cannot seem to get user mode working at all.

Thank you in advance!
