I'm trying to install SuSE v9.2 Professional Eval DVD on my laptop. I can't start any of avaible selections in menu: Installation, Instalation - No ACPI, Installation - Failsafe, Rescue... Each time process stops at this error:
Code:
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
crc error
VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(8,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3)
Can anybody knows how to solve it? I didn't have such problems with SuSE v9.1 nor Mandrake v10.1 installation.
I did have a similar problem to this - caused by mismatching kernels after an upgrade from 9.0 to 9.2 (when I'd tried manually building a 2.6.10 kernel somewhere inbetween!).
In my case, re-running the install program using the System Update path rather than clean install path solved the problem - basically it rebulit the kernel for me and redid the initrd stuff but left all application data intact.
edit - Alternatively, re-reading your post is the problem when trying to boot from the DVD? Have you tried a) reburning the DVD or b) redownloading the ISO image and burning it.
I tried an installation on my 2nd computer and result was the same.
I'm burning DVD again right now, but I dubt it will help.
And I would rather not to download this 3GB image again :-) If only I could check md5 under Windows. I tried with FastSum and QuickSFV. They both can't find file
I think you have a good chance with a new medium. However if the image is already defect, you'll need a fresh download. To check md5sum under windows have a look here: http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html
But I've checked md5 with application you linked me to. Correct me if I'm doing it wrong, but I compared md5 which I get from running "md5sum SUSE-Linux-9.2-FTP-DVD.iso" with one in md5 file from the web. And they are different
I guess it's time to get ISO again. But how should I download the image then? I used ReGet Deluxe and official FTP server in Germany. I thought it's pretty safe way to get proper ISO.
I'm not worry about the speed (even from Germany I had all my bandwith used). Could you advise me what program should I use to get this file, so the situation won't happen again?
I wasn't worried about the speed but the quality of your connection. Especially if you download from ftp.suse.com, the connection appears very unstable to me (I rarely do that).
OK, I've downloaded it again. This time I used FlashFXP, md5 is proper, and installation process works Donno what happened with previous image, but next time I'll start with md5 check after download
