Can't login to Desktop Manager except as root

All of a sudden, I can't log into KDE, Gnome or FWN etx except as root. If I log in with a normal user the screen kinda of starts to load then flashes and goes back to the login screen. I have created a brand new user, still same problem. Root is the only login that will work.

Try to delete (make a backup) all hidden (.) files (not directories) in the users homedirectory. I know a couple of cases where such a hidden file has locked the user out. This happens sometimes after the installation of the yahoo messenger.
