I've been having problems connecting to the internet after installing 11.2 on a Gateway M-series laptop. I'm using Networkmanager.

It goes like this. I find my network, click on it and configure it. I introduce the WEP key, and then the icon reads "Obtaining network adress". After a while, another window pops up asking for a Hex/Ascii key, which is already in (I didn't type it)... now no matter if I click OK, or if I type the 128 bit WEP key again, the manager status reads "Configuring interface", but after a while, it goes back to "Obtaining network address". The same window from before pops up and so son, until the status returns to "not available".

I don't know what's wrong. I had never had this problem on previous versions of Opensuse.

Did you do this install as an upgrade or a clean install? Since the card is trying to connect it looks like the drivers are installed. You should check that the WEP key is correct. You can do this through YaST.

Open YaST. Select Network Devices > Network Settings. A warning should pop up saying you can't make any changes because of NetworkManager. On the Global Options tab, select Traditional method with ifup. Go back to the Overview tab, highlight the wireless interface, and click Edit. On the Hardware tab, check that the driver name appears in the Module Name box. If this is OK, go back to the Address tab and check IP settings are correct (static or DCHP). Then click Next.

On the Wireless Device Settings page check the Operating Mode, ESSID, and Authentication Mode settings are correct. If you click on the WEP keys button you will see the key(s) in the clear so you can check them.

If all this is correct, when you get back to the main page, go to the Global Options tab and change the top setting back to ".. with NetworkManager".

I have kept 11.1 on my laptop but installed 11.2 as a 2nd boot. It has some intermittent problems connecting with some WPA, seems to be OK with WEP. It is an Acer TravelMate with INPROCOM IPN2220 wireless adapter.

Yes, it was a clean install.

I followed your instructions; indeed the proper drivers are installed and the WEP key seems correct, however I'm still unable to get online. I still get the same messages and windows that I described in my first post.

OK. I can think of a couple of other things. One is that your wireless router may need to authorise the interface again. I have had this problem with my BT Home Hub after it had a firmware upgrade. Another is that there is something in the way 11.2 does the authorisation doesn't work with you router. I have a problem connecting to my sisters Netgear, but my brother has a different version of the same model and that works OK.

Have you tried turning of the encryption and seeing if you can connect? Also check that router & laptop are both on the same frequency, or both are set to auto.
