Im using Suse 10.1 with a LG DVD-RAM GSA 4167B. If Im using a single layer DVD everything is OK. But if I trie to burn a double layer DVD I get this error.

Does anybody know whats wrong? I have nothing found with this error.

check to see if you need a firmware upgrade, my drives worked in windows but not in k3B until I had upgrade the firmware so that it supported standards required

It appears your Dual Layer disc is DVD-R DL

Most DVD burners only support DVD+R DL

In Windows I could burn DVD-R DL. So the burner should support it.
How could I check if I need a firmware upgrade?

different brands have different communities, options etc

Also, check the ownership of the files you want to burn. I've found that when I tried to burn a dual-layer .iso owned by root it would fail. When I changed ownership the burn was successful.

Why not invoke the k3b as root instead so all files will be accessible at all times? (Just click on "green Gecko" -> Menu Editor -> Multimedia -> CD/DVD burning; At the bottom select "Run as a different user", then enter "root" in the adjacent little slot-window; ctrl-S to "save new configuration". No "'s please. Now each time you start k3b, it will ask you for the root password.)

It´s no problem with ownership because I´m able to burn this files with k3b to 2 normal dvds. It´s a problem with dual layer dvds.
I also tried to update my firmware but the error is the same.
The problem is that I can´t find this error in the web. So I dont know what it means.

First I thougt it is a problem with dvd+rw-tools so I installed the latest version.
Does anybody know how i can find a description to this error?

Sorry to post to a 2-3 year old thread..but ..after recently installing ubuntu on my home pc I ran into the same problem with my LG DVD Writer and the same error.


What was the resolution back then ?
I'm getting pretty angry at the fact that Windows + Nero beats the hell out of writing DVDs in Linux in this particular case.

P.S. I also updated my DVD Writer firmware to the latest (DL-13 version) to no avail.

There was no resolution. I reported a bug to K3B and got the answer that these is problem with the firmware of this dvd-writer. Maybe it would be solved in the future by k3b or by a firmwareupdate.
Try to make a iso and use the command line tool cdrecord (this worked for me).
Or better way buy an ohter dvd writer (same as I did a little bit later).

I guess it's a growisofs problem then..as from what I saw k3b is using that for writing DVDs.
I also read that cdrecord supports writing DVDs so I'll temporarily go with your solution, this until I get another writer which is more compatible.
Firmware updates are no longer being made by LG and I have the latest so no luck here either.
I kept banging my head against the wall last night with this problem.

You could also buy a nero for linux. I think it´s also working with this dvd-writer (but I don´t realy know) because they are not using linux tools to burn to dvd. They have there own implementation. As I know the price is about 20€ the same as a new dvd-writer.

Got ahead of you with a couple of minutes on that one
I've just finished downloading the trial version of Nero for Linux.
Going to test it and if it writes ok..then 20 euro is not such a big deal for buying it.
I'll let you know what happens.
