Browsers crash in OpenSuse 11.0 ..firefox, opera, etc...

Hi,

I'm using OpenSuse 11 and so far it's rock solid. Except for Very frequent browser crashes. It started with Firefox and even after installing opera and Evolution, they crash too!

Anyone else have this issue? Anyone find a fix??

I informed the OpenSuse team, but wanted to post this here as well.

Thanks,
Brook

Evolution is an email client. I've had no browser problems at all, either through Konqueror or Firefox. What sites are you going to? Have you been applying the updates? There have been several to Java as well as Firefox. And are you running the OpenSuSE distributed version of Firefox, or the one you can get from Firefox directly?

Unhappy RE: Browsers crash in OpenSuse 11.0 ..firefox, opera, etc...

Actually, Evolution Email is running fine..sorry bout that.

But as far as Browser issues, the problem happens right after using Suse after installing it fresh off the DVD distro from Opensuse.org. No additional add-ons, mods or anything else except OS patches. The system is as vanilla as can be.

I go to CNN.com, linuxquestions.org etc. No streaming audio or video. It doesn't crash on certain sites either. But it's like every other website I load, it crashes. It happens even after installing Opera.

So it does not matter which browser I use, it still crashes randomly.

Very Bizarre.

If you do not find a solution it might be worthwhile to down load the Live and install Cd from opensuse and see what happens.
Although I have the dvd I use the install Cd and have to admit that I feel relieve after I find out that every think is working.

Lightbulb Good idea about the Live cd...

That's a good point. Thanks for the idea. I don't ever recall having this issue with the live cd's of any distro. I'll give it a go and report back.

Out of all the distro's I've tried this past month, I keep gravitating back to Suse. The Gnome version is so well polished and Yast is sooo much better now. They've really set the bar with version 11 IMHO

But I will say, Fedora 9 is running like a champ on an old HP laptop I have. Found all hardware and so far not one issue to report.

Have the same problem in an older distribution of SuSE. Problem is actually with the Macromedia Flash plugin. It supposedly affects both Windows and Linux. All your browsers are using the same flash plugin, so all will be affected. Don't know if a fix was issued, but it may be worth your while to try and update flash.

For what it's worth, my browser crashes on YouTube sometimes. It is an intermittent problem.

Confirmed: Flash Plugin

I started to suspect that has the crashes had something to do with the flash plugin, but today a confimed it. It is kinda funny that the official macromedia plugin can make the browser crash so often.

Bad plugin! Bad!

I have the exact same problem. Firefox and Epiphany crash very often when watching Youtube videos, I don't have problems with other flash videos sites.

Im running Opensuse 11 x86_32 on an AMD Athlon 64 PC, however I used to have Opensuse 11 x86_64 and I don't remember having to deal with this issue.. could it be an architecture problem? just out of curiosity, what processor do you have?

AMD Athlon 64. The computer is a few years old. Uses the older DDR RAM. The expensive kind.

Flash on linux can be a little tricky. I haven't encountered any problems, but others may find it...unforgiving.

The first thing I would do is make sure your copy of SuSE is updated. Check that you're running the latest Firefox and flash player (9.0.124). Since flash is 32-bit only, sometimes it crashes if you're running a 64-bit version of linux with nspluginwrapper. If anyone needs flash, then I'd recommend going back to the 32-bit version if it's giving you problems.

If that doesn't work, then try flashblock.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

This way, flash only loads when you need to.

Update to Flash 10

Well, today I installed the newest flash plugin for Linux from Adobe (10.0 r12) and the bug seems to have been fixed I've been watching flash videos and no random crashes so far, I urge those of you with the same problem to do so
