black menus

I recently did an apt-get update on my Suse 9.3 system and now many programs that have their own menus only show a black background in the menu. The contents of the menus are only visible when I run the cursor over them. Can anyone help me fix this problem? This happens in azureus, gimp, acroread and synaptic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You can try this not sure if it will work. Seems like the problem is with the gtk themes.This is how we do it with fluxbox or openbox. Create the file .gtkrc-2.0 in your home directory;
Code:
gtk-icon-theme-name = "Crux"
gtk-theme-name = "Traditional"
Just put whatever icon theme and theme you have on your system, most times in /usr/share/themes and /usr/share/icons If it doesn't work just remove it.

Tried it and to no effect. I also used kde control center to chosse varius gtk styles, such as qt and then the programs wont run. So I'm still stuck with black menus.

I had the same problem after doing an apt-get update with Suse 9.2. I was able to work around the problem by uninstalling the "gtk-qt-engine" package.

Removing gtk-qt-engine fixed the problem for me (SuSE 9.3).

You can also try to downgrade to the original gtk2 engine ignoring conflicts
