ATI is the devil

OK...I've installed SuSE, Slackware, Debian, etc. and have installed the ATI drivers a few times on those distros (8.21.x and earlier). The new 8.28.8 drivers are ones I am having problems with. I cannot seem to go into init 5 and startx anymore. For some reason, after the installation, I get a problem with Xorg saying it cannot display an X Server because it couldn't find any proper displayable monitors.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at http://wiki.X.Org
for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

I installed the drivers by making a SuSE 10.1 rpm, installing that rpm, then running aticonfig, then running sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx. But, at this point, it doesn't display the X Server for sax2 like the 8.21 driver did for me. So, I decided to uninstall that rpm, and went with the installer that came with the ATI driver. I installed the driver, then ran aticonfig --initial --input=blah, and still came up with the same problem.

Anyone with any suggestions?

I'm running an ATI Radeon X800XT on an NEC MultiSync XV17...I KNOW this is supported.

Thanks in advance...

Yes, I did check the log. The log says that it found my Radeon X800 XT, but could not find a suitable display for it. The portion I posted above is the very bottom of that log. I can post the entire log later, but the log is VERY long, as most of it appears to be fonts trying to load. But, those fonts don't load (the log file says the directories and file names are not present). It also looks out across the PCI bus, and finds the card, but as stated before, it fails due to not finding a display for it. Thankfully, I have my old xorg.conf file that I reverted to for the time being.

If I may be so bold, can I ask what distro specifically and which kernel and which cpu type and how many bits (32/64)?

It would also help to know what version of Xorg you are running.

I may just be able to help - except I only have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 to play with here.

if you are using the fglrx driver change to radeon or vesa and see what happens.
Your xorg.conf might also be of use
PS is the kernel module loaded?

I agree. From my experience, the "no screens found" error is usually due to some mistake in the xorg.conf file.
You should post your xorg.conf file.

I will post the xorg.conf file tonight, as I'm at work right now. What's funny is that I run linux at work, compile C++ programs on it, and work with Qt on Red Hat, but cannot get a stupid driver running...haha.

As far as an earlier post, I'll just give some system specs...

Pentium 4 3.0GHz Northwood (Hyperthreading enabled)
SuSE 10.1
X800XT
kernel from doing a "user -r" is 2.6.16.xx-SMP

I'll also post the xorg.conf.original-0 file (the backup before I installed the ATI drivers). I did a diff xorg.conf.original-0 xorg.conf and there were too many for me to look through late last night.

Sorry about all of the files. I believe it may be with the screen portion of the xorg.conf that deals with the ATI driver. Looks to be too many zeros.

Thanks...

I would say if the backup works then use that as a start and change "radeon" to "fglrx" in the "Device" section and see what happens. Good Luck

PS: this thread might be useful, its _very_ long but worth reading through it.

Well, I tried changing the "radeon" to "fglrx" and added a line to Load "dri", and it definitely causes massive puking (with spaghetti, corn, peanuts...etc). So, I'm not too sure where to go from here...

I'm also stumped, but the Enabling 3D Acceleration in X11 thread in the Slackware forum is a good place for answers to ATI problems.

Well, I looked down through the Slackware post and still couldn't get the drivers working. So I tried to install Fedora Core 5, and couldn't get it installed (hang ups with the first time boot and most of the time, problems with unmounting the CD to get the stupid thing installed). So, I reinstalled SuSE 10.1 just to get a Linux OS on my system. I then did some searching and tried to get compat-expat1 installed to see if this was a problem. I installed it, got some things removed out of my system after a fresh install, then installed the ATI driver. I ran SaX2, and guess what? No white text on black background (terminal). Unfortunately, this was the only good news. A black screen came up with tons of lines going across the monitor (video noise). So again, I'm stumped now. I've been searching the net, and have found other peole with the black screen problem, but I haven't found anyone that has actually fixed it.

However, supposedly with drivers later than 8.24.xx, you have to have compat-expat1 installed to get the driver working. Mainly because with the SuSE rpm build, when the kernel module is built, it looks for compat-expat1. And, if this isn't installed, and you try to install the ati driver, you won't get an error log. ...according to what I've been reading anyway.

So...any suggestions? Maybe try reinstalling SuSE and going with a different driver? lol...

Thanks...

OK...so I got an ATI driver installed, but it wasn't 8.28.8. It was 8.24.8. It was the only driver that would actually build and install correctly. Unfortunately, it's a little outdated. So, I would like to get the newer version up and running. Funny how the older version driver works, but the newer versions don't. Anyway, if you are searching for the older ATI driver, it is located at ATI's website:

www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.24.8-x86.run

You can get the drivers from the directory above, and just replace the filename with the linux driver you want to download. If anyone comes across the 8.28.8 driver working on SuSE 10.1, post a reply please!

Thanks!
